India Gate is a war memorial for those Indians who perished in WW1. It is hugely popular with both locals & tourists. The surroundings includes a huge park area and many government buildings are in the near vacinity.
The Mahatma Ghandi museum in New Delhi houses many of Ghandi's journals, photos, books and many relics all showcasing the life and principles of this influential Indian individual.
We took a slum tour with one of the teachers from this organisation. We were inundated with children as we bought a jar of sweets to share amongst them. It was like the 'Pied Piper of Hamlet' walking through the narrow streets. Kids were coming out from everywhere! It was lovely to see their smiling faces. The organisation provides free schooling for children & young adults. Everything from kindergarten to sewing skills and beauty therapy. They have very limited resources but do the best they can. The children in the kindergarten sung us songs and showed off their counting and alphabet skills. They were very proud of their achievements.
They maybe don't have much but their is a great sense of community amongst the slums. Everyone had a smile for us & loved saying hello & asking our names.
These kids didn't even have seats or desks but their enthusiasm for learning was apparent. They were so happy to have us visit & loved being photographed & then shown their picture.
These girls are having sewing lessons. The garments they make are sold at market to make money for the schools.
One of India's spectacular Step Wells. No taps just lots of steps to a very large hole in the ground where people had to come daily to obtain fresh drinking water and water for cooking & washing themselves or clothes. This one has since dried up and is no longer in use but proves to be a great tourist attraction. Many Indian families still have to make their way to a water pump daily to obtain water.
We spent time in both Delhi & New Delhi. Delhi was manic with people & traffic everywhere!! It was busy with markets & there were many of the holly cows wandering around doing their business everywhere so you can imagine the cleanliness wasn't their number one priority! New Delhi is much more developed and cleaner with wider roads, shopping malls & beautiful hotels & homes. There were signs about safe driving and the motorists actually seemed to obey them & their was a distinct lack of horn use which was a pleasant relief!!!!
