New Zealand

Off to Christchurch!

Christchurch has a great tram service. They are beautifully restored & well looked after. They come complete with a driver full of information about the city.  Christchurch suffered from two earthquakes in 2010/2011.  They are still rebuilding the city & there are still piles of rubble where there used to be buildings.  In the beginning they brought in shipping containers which they turned into shops & restaurants to begin the regeniration process.  They have incorporated bright various sculptures and art work amongst the rubble to give us a glimmer of the future they are hoping to achieve! Our tram driver told us that when all building work is completed Christchurch will be buzzing with business', shops, restaurants & night life!!

This is the re-start project. On the other side of this is a bustling centre with shops & cafes!

Our very kind tram driver let Josh stand up front with him & ring the bell when the tram was moving away from a stop.  He also let him help when the tram was changing direction & allowed him to help drive up a very straight road!! Much happiness!!!

Time for a break!

Spot of family canoeing up the river in the sunshine!!

'185 Empty Chairs' This is a temporary art installation reflecting the loss of lives following the 2011 earthquake!  The type of chairs depict the children, adults, roles & jobs.

We took a trip on the Trans Alpine Express!! It took us over the mountains to the other side of New Zealand.  The scenery was stunning & reminded us of our Bonny Scotland!!! The trip also included a 20 minute tunnel & a number of viaducts which were supper high!!!!

Josh enjoying some fresh air in the open carriage!!

"I want another packet of crisps" No!!!!

Early morning flight home!!
